A Double Standard

Activists in support of legalizing e-cigarettes question governmental figurehead’s alarmist language concerning the non-tobacco products. Studies confirm that e-cigarettes contain fewer harmful chemicals, cause fewer deaths and diseases and are a safer method for nicotine delivery. Meanwhile, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to employ tactics that e-cigarette manufacturers call unfair. Anti-electronic cigarette organizations claim that the presence of diethylene glycol and nitrosamines in the vapor cartridges are a risk and spread fear among a cigarette-addicted population in urgent need of safe smoking cessation alternatives.

Their message also reaches non-smokers, purposefully planting the belief that non-tobacco devices are just as dangerous as regular cigarettes. The fact is, other nicotine replacement products approved by the FDA contain nitrosamines, making e-cigarettes no more harmful than nicotine gum, patches and lozenges. One federal judge accused the FDA of purposely and wrongfully trying to control and regulate electronic cigarettes in an overly aggressive manner.…

The Media Storm

Brian first tried to place his classified ad in the Globe and Mail, but was refused. He then called the National Post, who accepted his ad, and it ran from from Monday, Feb 19 to Friday, Feb 23, 2001. The ad only contained a mailbox number, no name or phone number.

Within hours, a reporter at the National Post did some digging and obtained Brian’s personal information. He was told that the story would run with or without his input.

After getting advice from friends and family, he decided that he may as well work with the media and ensure that the information was accurate. He had no idea of waht was coming…

The first story came out on February 19, and was on the front page of the National Post.

By the next day, Brian began to get calls from Radio and TV Talk show hosts from around North America. He also made the headlines again in the Post on February 20 and the 21st.

By the end of the week, Brian had been speaking on over 20 Radio Shows and had appointments for several TV shows.

Suddenly, Brian was inundated with hundreds of letters, packages, videos, and job offers, and the story still had not run its course.

By early March, the story had made its way to Europe and he began taking calls from as far away as England and New Zealand.

Plus, a copy of his classified ad began making its way around the internet. Soon, he was scheduled to appear on Good Morning America, and his story was covered in the Wall Street Journal. (See the National Post, March 15.)

More articles about Brian have appeared in many international publications, including Ananova and the Financial Times.

The story is not over yet… stay tuned.

Drug Smuggler turns into a celebrity

A former international drug smuggler who purchased for-hire advertisements in the National Post has become something of an international media celebrity, thanks in part to the Internet.

Brian O’Dea was scheduled to appear today on the ABC television show Good Morning America with host Diane Sawyer, after copies of his ad — along with news stories about his gambit — were circulated by e-mail around the world.

The Wall Street Journal recounted his story in yesterday’s issue after one of its reporters received the e-mail, and Reader’s Digest is producing an article about him.

Producers for Oprah Winfrey, the superstar talk-show host, have also expressed interest, though they have not scheduled an appearance. The BBC and Radio Ireland are among the overseas broadcasters who have arranged interviews with him.

“Initially it was a little overwhelming, but what surprises me is that it goes on,” Mr. O’Dea said. “I suppose this has happened because I’m someone who speaks out about something most people would keep secret.”

Mr. O’Dea, a 52-year-old who was born in Newfoundland but now lives in Toronto, threw caution to the wind last month by running a frank advertisement on this newspaper’s classified pages.

The ad touted the management and organizational skills he acquired as a marijuana importer in the 1980s, noting he helped distribute more than $100-million worth of Vietnamese-grown cannabis on the northwest U.S. coast.

It also pointed out he has completed a 10-year prison sentence for his crimes and is determined to support his family “through legal and legitimate means.”

The media response was intense: Mr. O’Dea pegs the number of media calls to his home at about 200, with no end in sight.

As for job offers, he has sifted through more than 150 responses to the ad — many from reporters and jokesters. But he has identified 15 expressions of interest from prospective employers, a handful of which he deems promising.

“They’re not all jobs I would want,” he said. “But they’re all kind to have called.”…

What Are The States With Medical Marijuana?

Marijuana is to date one of the world’s most controversial drugs. This is as a result of the dissonance between the federal states which believe that it’s harmful to humans hence ought to be criminalized and, the medical practitioners and citizens who believe that it has lots of medical values. So far, medical marijuana has been legalized in 24 states / regions. In order of the first, to the most recent, these include:

California – The state was the first to pass an initiative to legalize medical marijuana – in November 1996. As of today, California has the largest number of dispensaries and wellness clinics (over 2,100).

Alaska – Although Alaska legalized cannabis in November 1998, it wasn’t until March 1999 that law became effective.

Oregon – In Oregon, legalization took place in November 1998.

Washington – Cultivation and possession of cannabis was legalized in November 1998. To qualify, one has to have a medical certificate.

Maine – Legalization of the drug took place in November 1999.

Colorado – Decriminalization of medical cannabis came to effect in November 2000. However, one should never take it within a place where the public can see them.

Hawaii – Legalization of marijuana in Hawaii came into being in June 2000.

Nevada – In the state of Nevada, legalization took place in November 2000.

Vermont – The senate bill which legalized cannabis in the state went into effect in July 2004.

Montana – In November 2, 2004, Montana legalized medical cannabis. The initiative took effect immediately.

Rhode Island – The law to legalize medical cannabis took place in January 2006 and came into effect immediately. However, certain conditions have to be met.

New Mexico – The state authorized New Mexico patients to use cannabis in April 2007.

Michigan – The state passed an initiative to legalize the drug in November 2008. Under the same law, it was recommended that a patient be issued with a card within 20 days after application.

Arizona – The state legalized marijuana in November 2010 under the Arizona Medical Marijuana Act. Though it allows someone with a doctor’s recommendation to possess a given amount of cannabis, it shouldn’t be used within child care facilities and/or educational institutions.

New Jersey – In New Jersey, patients with severe chronic illnesses were let to use cannabis starting January 2010.

Delaware – Legalization of medical cannabis came into effect on May 2011 after Jack Markell, the governor, signed the bill.

Washington, DC – In DC, marijuana became legal in Jan 2011. The signed bill took effect on July 2014.

Connecticut – Legalization of cannabis in Connecticut took place in June 2012.

Massachusetts – The state legalized medical cannabis on November 6, 2012.

New Hampshire – Access to medical marijuana to all qualified patients was made possible after the state legalized the drug in July 2013.

Illinois – Legalization of cannabis in Illinois took place in August 2013. However, the law went into effect on January 2014.

Maryland – Maryland first passed the medical cannabis affirmative defense law in 2003, which was later amended (in 2011) before decriminalizing the possession of the drug in April 2014.

Minnesota – Even though Minnesota was among the very first states to decriminalize marijuana – in the 70’s, it wasn’t until May 2014 that a medical cannabis program was established.

New York – The state of New York is the latest to legalize the drug. This happened in June 2014.

Despite being legal, in some states (Colorado and Washington), if an employee tests positive for drugs, s/he may get fired. This is irrespective as to whether they have a doctor’s recommendation or not. The luckiest states are Arizona, California, Colorado, Maine, Michigan, Montana, New Mexico and Rhode Island where there are dispensaries specializing in the sale of medical marijuana. Patients living in other states have to rely on the black market to get it.…

John Wells

Hi, my name is John Wells. Before you go too far, I want you to know that I am an entrepreneur. This posting is a request for you to visit my website and fill out a market survey. I am not selling anything… I don’t have anything to sell at this point, hence the market survey. This survey is designed to tell me whether what I do plan to sell is of actual interest to people. I need your help in determining this. I think you will agree, I cannot do this type of survey outside my local K-mart.

The product I intend to market is a vapourizer that I have designed. Last year I began tinkering around with some ideas for my own personal use, and became very engrossed in the process. I found through my research a number of interesting designs, some good… most questionable. I found that there had been some relatively new research done on the efficacy of Vapourizers and that the technology was showing some promising potential. Before I knew it I had invested over $3000 and hundreds of hours in the project.

I believed I had a pretty good idea, and innovative approach to vapourizer design, so decided that it might be worth a shot at making it a business. I had been researching all the companies making Vapourizers and felt I had a better design than most, and more importantly, I had an interest in not only selling this product, but also developing the technology. Vapourizers are not new, but they are still in the proverbial Stone Age. They seem to be an emerging technology, but to date there has been little evidence of anyone truly trying to perfect them. At the least, I would like to be among those who push this technology past its infancy. At best I would like to be a leader in the field.

The market survey I am asking you to fill out is a kind of reality check. Is this project worth all my effort, or should I get a “real job”. Even if you have never heard of a vapourizer I ask you to check out the site. Your input is very important, and you will be helping to shape not only my business, but also Vapourizer technology. I am slowly building the site up and plan to have some good links for people who have questions about this technology. I have seen a lot of questions posted on these message boards about Vapourizers, and while some of the responses are good, there is a lot of misinformation out there. If you have any questions, please fell free to ask me.…
